Gotthard Pass

After the nightly rain storm the weather has calmed down. I decided to do a road trip today, to test the camper's mountain climbing capabilities.

The van had only one previous owner: Glasgow City Council. So since 2014 the van only was travelling on low elevations. Never had to climb a serious mountain.

This will change today: Gotthard Pass is on the menu.

The Schöllenenschlucht on the slope up to Andermatt is no problem at all.

On the way to Gotthard Pass.

Arrived OK at the Pass.

This is the old road: Val Tremola, heading down South to Airolo. It is only sometimes open, and only for vehicles below 3.5 tons. Luckily, my van is still below this limit, and the road is open today.

But first something to eat

And then a dessert:

And then a piece of Alpkäse (Alpine cheese), for bringing home.

Then I am strengthened enough to go down the Val Tremola.

All cobble stone - probably dangerous when wet. Therefore the road is closed when it rains. The new road is open also in rain and can be seen in the picture below above the old road.

Many curves and turns on the olde road.

Made the Gotthard Pass without any problems, with the descent through Val Tremola.

The van has successfully passed its first mountain test.
